It's important we allow animal activists to record instances of animal cruelty in order to be able to prosecute those involved in it. For example, in an incident in Texas, employees of a cattle company were recorded brutally slaughtering cows that were affected by frostbite.
Recordings like these are integral in ensuring this kind of inhumanity is punished. A proposed law in Iowa (H.F. 589) is looking to ban these videos completely — making it impossible for animal advocates to reveal instances of torture. Supporters of the legislation argue this legislation will help stop "crush videos" (animal torture videos), but their admirable intentions also will stop animal activists from producing concrete and valuable evidence of abuse.
We need to make sure our animal advocates are protected and are allowed to record acts of injustice against animals. Support our animal activists and sign the petition in opposition to H.F. 589 today.
Dear Iowa legislature,
I am writing to voice my opposition to the proposed legislation H.F. 589. The law, if passed, would make it illegal for anyone to record instances of animal cruelty. While recording these acts is contemptible if done for entertainment purposes, it's necessary in order to prove occurrences of animal abuse.
At a cattle company in Texas, many cows who had been affected by frostbite were brutally slaughtered by employees wielding hammers and pickaxes. If this event hadn't been caught on tape, there may have been no proof that it had actually happened.
We shouldn't prevent animal advocates from speaking out for abused animals and we need our animal welfare organizations to be able to conduct investigations into possible cases of torture.
Please stand up for the animals and DO NOT PASS H.F. 589!
