Goal: 20,000 Progress: 19,681

The blue whale is the most beautiful and largest creature on Earth. Blue whales are peaceful animals that feed on tiny fish for survival. The world's population once rested at close to 400,000, but now, there are only an estimated 10,000 left globally. Human interference has caused these whales to perish in alarming numbers.

Predation and commercial shipping are the main culprits behind the whales' demise. Large groups of the whales migrate each summer through a channel off the coast of Southern California — one that's also a main shipping line. Cargo ships often collide with feeding whales who don't have enough time to get out of the way. These collisions usually result in injury or death.

The ocean is the whales' home and humans are merely guests in it. Sign the petition asking California Senator Barbara Boxer to create legislation that would prohibit large cargo ships from sailing through the channel during whale season.

Dear Senator Boxer,

The blue whale is one of the most majestic living creatures on Earth, and yet, one of the most threatened. It is estimated that there are only around 10,000 of them left globally. Human predation and commercial shipping interference are much to blame for the population deficiency, and it's time we put our foot down to stop this preventable situation.

Every summer, the whales migrate to the California Bight — which also happens to be one of the busiest shipping channels in the Pacific Ocean. When the whales are feeding, they're vulnerable to collisions with the ships. The whales usually don't survive these collisions, as they most often are badly injured or killed immediately.

The ocean belongs to the whales, not humans. The ships need to find different routes during the summer months so that the whales may exist in the harmony and peace as they are meant. I am writing to ask that you propose legislation that would bar any commercial ships from sailing through the blue whale habitat during their migration.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.
