It is once again time to take a stand for the precious polar bear. A report recently surfaced about a mother polar bear who swam for nine days, nonstop, searching for food for herself and her cub. While polar bears are accustomed to freezing temperatures, the unprecedented nine-day swim caused the bear to lose more than twenty percent of her body fat, as well as her small cub.

The distance and time of the mother's swim indicates that warming temperatures are having profound effects on polar bear survival — she was forced to swim for nine straight days in order to find an ice floe.

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar has repeatedly refused to uplist the polar bear from "threatened" to "endangered." But it's clear that polar bears are in serious peril. Urge Secretary Salazar to list polar bears as "endangered" once again in order to increase the urgency on saving this majestic species!

Dear Secretary Salazar:

A report recently surfaced about a mother polar bear who swam for nine days, nonstop, searching for food for herself and her cub. Although polar bears are equipped to handle the freezing climate, the unprecedented nine-day swim proved to be catastrophic for the bear — she lost more than twenty percent of her body weight and her small cub died attempting to make the journey with her.

Global warming is wreaking havoc on the polar bears' habitat, as melting ice floes are becoming harder and harder to find. If bears don't have sufficient ice surfaces to rest on, they will eventually drown searching for food.

I am writing to ask that you declare polar bears as endangered. If we don't create urgency surrounding the polar bears' situation, we will continue with the false idea that nothing needs to be done in order to preserve this majestic species.

Thank you for your time.

May 13, 2013 Elizabeth Miles Dear Sir: Global warming is decimating the habitat of the polar bear. Since a healthy ecosystem requires a healthy population of its top predators, please grant polar bears the extra protection they need in order to survive by declaring them endangered.
