The pain that ducks and geese raised for foie gras experience is unspeakable. Foie gras — enlarged duck or geese liver — is a well-known delicacy.
But there's an ugly dark side to foie gras because of the way it is produced. Birds are force-fed a corn substance through long tubes that are forced down their throats. This happens many times a day until the livers have become enlarged and diseased. At this time, the birds are killed and the liver is sold as foie gras.
There is no end to the pain birds endure during this process. The tubes cause internal bleeding and punctures. Some birds are fed so much they simply burst or choke to death on their own vomit.
It's a grisly industry that exploits innocent animals for simple human pleasure. No one requires foie gras as a dietary need, so there is no reason to continue producing this cruelty-laden product.
Urge the USDA to outlaw foie gras entirely.
Dear Secretary of Agriculture Thomas Vilsack:
As much of a delicacy it might be, foie gras is one of the most cruelty-laden food products. The production of foie gras includes workers shoving tubes down ducks' and geese's throats and force feeding them a corn substance. Over time the birds' livers become diseased and enlarged — this is when they are killed and the foie gras is sold to restaurants.
Some of the birds don't even survive this process as overfeeding can cause their stomachs to literally burst. The feeding tubes can also puncture their esophaguses.
Ducks and geese raised for foie gras live terrible, painful lives. They are kept in tiny cages and live uncomfortably until they are killed.
There is no reason to continue eating this food. Please outlaw the production and consumption of foie gras immediately.
Thank you.
