**9/7/10: Rosneft is moving forward with its seismic exploration, making the gray whale more vulnerable than ever. Rosneft continues to ignore public comments and pleas from environmental organizations that call for protections for the gray whale. Please continue to sign this petition asking Rosneft to do the right thing.
Western Pacific gray whales are in serious danger and need help immediately. Rosneft, a Russian-based oil company, has plans to survey for seismic activity in an area of the ocean where gray whales go to feed each year. The exploration they are set to begin is very dangerous for these whales as it can interfere with their feeding patterns. The plans are especially concerning for mothers and calves, as mothers teach their young to feed on their own in this area.
Sign the petition asking Rosneft president Sergey Bogdanchikov to reconsider his company's plans, or find more humane tactics to conduct the surveys.
Dear Sergey Bogdanchikov,
I am very concerned about your company's plans to conduct surveys in an area where Western Pacific gray whales come to feed and raise their young. The seismic exploration you plan to do can cause serious harm to these majestic animals. Not only do your sonic pulses interfere with feeding patterns, they also alarm the whales and prevent mothers from being able to teach their calves hunting skills.
While I understand the need for technological advancement, I do not believe animals should be harmed in the process. I urge you to find more humane ways to conduct your exploration. We cannot continue to live in a world in which the pursuit of success hinders us from taking care of the living creatures on our planet. Please reconsider conducting the survey, or put efforts toward making it animal-friendly.
Thank you.
