Goal: 50,000 Progress: 40,860
Sponsored by: The Animal Rescue Site

It's time we stopped profiting off of the misery of animals. Commercial dog breeders breed puppies for the sake of turning a profit — many times, without regard for the puppies at all. The breeders aren't interested in dogs' well-being — they simply want to keep the inventory moving, unconcerned with even basic humane standards.

The Puppy Uniform Protection and Safety (PUPS) Act (H.R. 835) targets all commercial dog breeders, requiring them to provide their dogs with daily exercise and outdoor stimulation. It would also mandate appropriate enclosures, such as cages with solid, non-wire flooring and enough space to move around.

Write to representative Jim Gerlach, co-sponsor of H.R. 835, thanking him for his support of puppies and asking him to continue advocating for the passage of H.R. 835.

Dear Representative Jim Gerlach:

Thank you for co-sponsoring the Puppy Uniform Protection and Safety (PUPS) Act (H.R. 835). If passed, this bill will go a long way in protecting puppies who are bred for commercial purposes.

Currently, the USDA only requires dog breeders who sell to brokers or pet stores to carry a license to do so. They aren't required to follow regulations or guidelines when it comes to breeding and caring for their puppies. They often keep them in tiny cages without allowing them the time to run free outside and participate in daily exercise. The conditions these puppies often inhabit are horrifyingly sub-par and do nothing to promote their future health.

Put simply, commercial breeders' primary goal is to churn out puppies as quickly as possible — they are not interested in the welfare of the dogs. That's why we need increased standards put into law as outlined by H.R. 835.

Please continue to fight for puppies and for the passage of H.R. 835.
