Hawaii's sea turtles need your help!
The green sea turtle, also known as honu, is an endangered species. Over the years populations have declined as people have poached them for their meat as well as for cultural and religious traditions. Overfishing and habitat loss are also to blame for the decimation of the species.
Though the turtles are officially listed as "endangered" by the Endangered Species Act, they continue to be hunted and their habitat eroded.
Please join us in asking the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) to continue supporting the replenishment of this precious species.
Dear Daniel M. Ashe, Director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service:
I am writing to ask for your help on behalf of the green sea turtle in Hawaii, otherwise known as the honu.
Commercial fishing, habitat erosion, and harvesting of honu eggs threaten the species with the distinct possibility of extinction. However, the fact that humans have much to do with this plight is also encouraging; we can do something about it.
This means keeping turtles at their current status of "endangered" so that those who interfere with their proliferation are punished accordingly. It also means working closely with humans in the area as well as other nations to ensure the imminent risk is universally recognized.
Please do all you can to see that the honu doesn't continue on the path towards extinction.
Thank you for your consideration.
