Here in the United States, horses aren't exactly considered a delicacy in the food world. In fact, in a recent poll, about 80% of Americans are opposed to horse slaughter of any kind. So why are certain proponents of horse slaughtering trying to open slaughterhouses right here in America?
The answer is simple: because they see a considerable market for horse meat, which is indeed a delicacy in many other cultures. These advocates want to slaughter horses here and ship their meat overseas.
That's not even the worst part. Many of the horses that end up in slaughterhouses may not be of show quality, but they are perfectly healthy. Once they end up there, regardless of health, their fate is sealed.
Other countries can do what they want, but Americans don't want horses slaughtered for food. Call on the USDA to respect the wishes of 80% of America and to deny any applications for horse slaughter plants in the US.
Dear Secretary of Agriculture Thomas Vilsack:
While most of us don't consider horse meat to be a viable food option, many people in other cultures and parts of the world consider it to be a delicacy. There is a considerable market for horse meat, and that's why many horse slaughter advocates would like to open slaughterhouses here in the US in order to ship the meat overseas.
But in a recent poll conducted by the USDA, over 80% of Americans oppose horse slaughter. This isn't something anyone wants or needs, and you should not grant permission to those looking to collect payment from killing these innocent animals.
Perhaps most egregious is the fact that many of the horses that end up at slaughterhouses are in perfectly good health.
Please do not allow horse slaughter in the United States!
