After immense pressure from animal advocates, NASA quietly canceled the experiments and initiated a comprehensive review of its research and technology development plans. NASA’s announcement was a welcome one, as the planned study raised a number of scientific and ethical concerns.

NASA recently presented a proposal that would allow for experimental testing on 18-30 primates. The monkeys would be subject to intense radiation, as the experiments are designed to reveal the effects of different conditions on Mars. The primates would potentially suffer extreme sickness, radiation poisoning, and even death.

What's more is that not only will this project be completely taxpayer-funded, but there is also no concrete timeline for a mission to Mars. These would be experimental studies that may or may not have any bearing on science at all. Sign the petition telling NASA administrator Charles Bolden to abandon plans for these inhumane experiments.

Dear Mr. Bolden,

I am writing to voice my concern over NASA's plans to use monkeys in experimental testing. The nature of the tests could leave many of the monkeys severely ill or even dead. The potential outcome is simply not worth the risk of this project.

Subjecting any living thing to prolonged contact with radiation most certainly produces negative effects. Past studies similar to this one have proven to be immensely dangerous and harmful to animals. Why then, if armed with this information, would NASA still choose to use the primates in their studies?

While I fully support advancements in the realms of science and space travel, I cannot back a proposal that promises to harm innocent living creatures. Please reconsider your use of monkeys in experimental studies.

Sincerely,
