12/12/12: A new investigative report from IFAW depicts a thriving puppy mill trade, relying on the internet to circumvent federal regulations that apply to brick-and-mortar establishments and ensure humane treatment of animals. Deceitful Internet promotions and advertisements obscure the true nature of an animal's upbringing, as innocent consumers believe they are dealing with credible breeders. Continue signing to support stricter regulation of Internet trafficking.

The online market is a dangerous place for puppies. That's because through this medium, puppy mill operators and uncertified breeders sell puppies that have been bred solely for rapid sale. This often means the dogs have been raised in horrible conditions, in facilities that don't live up to even basic welfare standards.

The puppy mill operators run these businesses without having to meet any federal regulations and without being subject to oversight.

Write to the Secretary of Agriculture asking that the USDA start cracking down on the online puppy mill business.

Dear Secretary Vilsack:

With the help of modern technology, it's easier than ever for uncertified puppy mill operators to participate in the unethical commerce of puppies.

Breeders are mass-breeding puppies in sub-par conditions and then selling them as rapidly as possible. The dogs are raised among countless other dogs, among feces and in tiny cages.

I need your help to stop this cruelty. These breeders are completely ignoring the health of the dogs in favor of profit alone.

Your department's own internal audit recognized the inadequacies and anachronisms of the 1966 Animal Welfare Act, which did not anticipate today's Internet marketplace. It is time to act on the proposed changes and subject online dealers to the same federal regulations and inspections as brick-and-mortar establishments.

Please continue the crusade against puppy mills by eradicating the online puppy mill trade once and for all!
