12/20/12: Thanks to the public outcry over the NIH’s plan to return the New Mexico chimpanzees to research, the institute reversed course and commissioned an independent review of biomedical research on chimps. The expert panel found almost no scientific need for such research, resulting in stricter criteria for future experiments. Consequently, the chimps are being permanently retired to the Chimp Haven sanctuary, setting an important precedent for those still eligible for research.

Back in the late 1990s, hundreds of chimpanzees were rescued from research facilities that were conducting harmful, and at times even fatal, experiments on them. These chimps had been exposed to all types of deadly diseases — most frequently HIV and hepatitis C. Other tests were also performed such as surgical and anesthesiological experiments.

While the chimpanzees were removed in order to protect their safety, they now face the risk of having to return to the research facilities they came from. Because the contract is coming to an end with the center who initially took in the chimps, the animals are in danger of having to go through more invasive and damaging tests.

These chimpanzees do not deserve to undergo medical experiments and suffer because of them. Sign the petition asking Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius to ensure the chimps are given good homes and not transferred back to the research companies.

Dear Secretary Sebelius,

I am writing to voice my concerns over the transfer of hundreds of chimpanzees to research labs. The chimps who stand to relocate have already faced many invasive and harmful testing done by previous research facilities, and they have experienced a great deal of trauma. Some have been intentionally exposed to deadly diseases such as HIV and hepatitis C. They have also been the subjects of surgical and anesthesiological testing.

This kind of treatment is outrageous and completely inhumane. Chimpanzees don't deserve to suffer at the hands of modern medicine. There are smarter, less cruel ways to conduct experiments, and there is simply no reason to harm these poor, innocent animals. The chimps have already gone through enough; they deserve to live out the rest of their lives in peace and harmony, free from the possibility of deadly medical testing.

Please see to it that these chimps find their way to a safe and peaceful home.

Thank you for your consideration.
