Deforestation is the primary cause of loss of habitat for pandas over the years. Humankind continues to log the forests in which these majestic animals live, making way for development or harvesting the trees for palm oil. There are only around 1,500 giant pandas left in the world, and the count is still declining.
China, where the majority of the world's pandas live, has set aside reserves that are designated protected areas for pandas. This is no doubt a step in the right direction, but the panda still remains in danger of extinction. The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) is working with China to establish reserves and helping to develop a program that will make giant strides toward securing the panda's survival.
There isn't much time. Sign the petition in support of the WWF's work in China and its mission to save the giant panda's natural habitat.
Dear Yolanda Kakabadse, President of World Wildlife Fund International,
I am writing to express my support of your advocacy for pandas in China and around the world. The panda is a peaceful creature, and exists mainly in the Eucalyptus mountain forests of China.
But this adorable animal is in serious danger. Its natural habitat is being depleted due to human development, and the panda now faces extinction. With only about 1,500 left in the wild, the giant panda is fighting for survival. Its forests are being logged for development as well as for the production of palm oil, a substance found in many food products we eat today.
I am aware of the work the WWF is doing around the world in favor of the giant panda's survival, and I would like to voice my appreciation for those efforts as well as encourage you to continue to stand up for the panda.
Humans have put the panda in this situation, and now humans are its only chance for redemption. Please carry on the fight.
