Sea Otter populations are decreasing rapidly, and it's largely due to human-provoked environmental destruction. As our oceans become more and more inundated with trash, deadly chemicals, oil spills, etc, marine life suffers greatly. California's sea otters are especially in danger. 2010 marks the fourth straight year the California sea otter population has declined.
If we are going to have the chance of saving the otter population, we need to enact comprehensive legislation that would provide for research and conservation efforts. Sign the petition in support of this important legislation that will enable and promote sea otter survival!
Dear Senator Barbara Boxer:
I am writing to you seeking support for the California sea otter. You co-sponsored a bill to save the sea otter population in 2009, and I'm hoping your continued support on this issue will add another element of urgency to the sea otters' plight.
As you know, the California sea otter population has seen sharp declines the past four years in a row. Environmental destruction and pollution are the main factors at work in devastating these adorable creatures' habitat: for example, lawn fertilizer causes deadly runoff and ocean trash taints the otters' natural environment.
Though there has been significant environmental damage that has contributed to the sea otters' endangerment, we can take action and attempt to reverse the destruction. The 2009 legislation would have required a research and recovery program that would allow scientists to learn more about this species and what it will take to bring it back from the brink of extinction. Sadly, though, this bill never passed into law.
Please re-emphasize your support to the southern California sea otters!
