Shark finning is an abominable practice that has seen a sharp increase in the past few years. This cruel process involves cutting the fins off of live, wild sharks, and then using them for a special shark fin soup found mainly in China. Shark meat itself isn't considered to be a delicacy, but the fins are highly coveted. Fishermen catch the sharks and cut off their fins. They then throw the sharks back in the sea where they die slow, agonizing deaths.
Human greed and consumption is fueling this corrupt industry and it needs to be stopped immediately. There is simply no need to consume animal products that cause unnecessary pain or death for the animal.
The Shark Conservation Act of 2009 would prohibit shark finning in U.S. terrirtory. The House has already passed this bill, and it's now sitting in the Senate waiting to be voted upon. Sign the petition in favor of the Shark Conservation Act and stand up for our sharks!
Dear Senator John Kerry,
I am writing to express my support of the Shark Conservation Act of 2009 that you are sponsoring.
It is estimated that over 100 million sharks die per year at the hand of greedy fishermen, all so that humans can enjoy a delicacy called shark fin soup. Mainly found in China, shark fin soup requires fishermen to hunt the sharks and cut off their fins. They are then released back into the wild without any consideration for their future health — after being thrown back to sea the sharks sink to the ocean floor where they die a slow and painful death.
The Shark Conservation Act would make illegal all shark finning in U.S. waters. Please encourage your colleagues to support this important legislation so we may provide necessary protections for these innocent creatures.
Thank you for your consideration.
