If you're looking for a new pet, it can be tempting to go straight to a breeder or to be enticed by kittens being sold at pet stores. But if you really want to save an animal's life, you might consider adopting a pet from your local animal shelter.
Animals end up at shelters for all kinds of reasons — they may have been stray, or they may have been unwanted by previous owners. One thing is for certain: animals who end up in shelters are the most at-risk for euthanization due to overcrowding or inability to be adopted.
That's why adopting from a shelter can save more than just your pet's life. It clears room for other stray or unwanted animals to come and have the chance to be adopted.
Write to President Obama asking him to endorse a National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day, so that we can raise awareness about the importance of saving the lives of our shelter animals!
Dear President Obama,
I want to add my voice to the more than 300,000 people who have already joined the TAILS Pet Media Group's Letters for Pets campaign requesting a National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day.
With almost ten million animals euthanized each year in the United States, it's perplexing that many people still turn to commercial breeders and pet stores to purchase their pets. Shelter animals are at the highest risk of being euthanized due to shelter overcrowding. There is simply no way our shelters can sustain the number of animals who need homes.
This is why it's so vital that we emphasize the importance of adopting from a shelter. Shelter adoptions not only give a safe home to the pet being adopted, but also clear space for other needy animals who need a place to live.
I am writing to ask that you implement a National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day so we can educate the public on the significance of adopting from a shelter. It's time to stand up for our pets!
Thank you for your consideration.
