Bon Appetit — a company that provides catering to colleges and corporations — has enhanced its effort to save animals. It has consistently demonstrated social responsibility, but the latest announcement further solidifies the firm's promise to protect animals.

Bon Appetit's new policies, according to the company's press release, make it "the food industry's most comprehensive farm animal welfare policy to date." The reforms are as follows:

· all pork must not be raised in gestation crates; welfare housing must be used instead
· all hens must be housed in cage-free facilities
· fois gras will no longer be offered
· only responsible poultry, meat, and egg producers who have received animal welfare certifications will be used

Thank Bon Appetit for advocating for the fair treatment of America's farm animals.

Dear Bon Appetit executives:

I would like to commend you for making great strides toward the ethical treatment of all animals in the United States. As one of the food industry's leading food service providers, you are setting the standard for other companies to do the same.

We have all in one way or another witnessed the outcome and horror of poor treatment of livestock and poultry. Animals living in confined spaces contract lethal and contagious diseases, lie in their own waste, and infect other animals. Weak and injured animals don't receive treatment because of the cost, and instead are left to fend for themselves or die. Many confined animals engage in self-mutilation due to boredom, and often sit in their cages bloodied and wounded.

If the animals we consume aren't healthy, it's only natural that we risk our own health, too. That's why, not just for animal welfare, but also for our health, the food industry must work hard to make sure all animals used for human consumption are being handled safely and cleanly.

Thank you for standing up both for animal and human health.
