Tordesillas, in the Castilla y León region of Spain, is the site of a popular event called El Toro de la Vega, or "Bull With Spears." Each September, it is is celebrated throughout the region and involves groups of people chasing bulls and throwing spears at them until the bull dies from blood loss.
Many claim this event is cultural and a significant part of Spain's heritage. But these claims are simply being used as a ploy to defend a cruel activity. We cannot continue to legitimize a "cultural event" if it involves harming animals.
"Cruelty toward animals is not an ethical form of entertainment. Any event that allows an animal to be tortured and killed by men armed with spears can never be justified as a cultural event," said Kitty Block, vice president of Humane Society International.
Write to Spain's Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy asking that he intervene on this cruel event in the name of humane treatment of all animals.
Dear Prime Minister Rajoy:
I'm writing to ask for your attention on a matter that concerns animal cruelty being committed in your country.
Each year in September, a group of people arm themselves with spears and chase bulls into close-by fields; they then spear the bulls and then stab them to death.
How can this be considered a sport, or fun for that matter? Any activity that involves harming another living being does not justify a sport or legitimate event.
I strongly urge you to do something about this inhumanity. The majority of rest of the world is staunchly opposed to hurting animals, and by continuing this practice, you are tarnishing Spains reputation with the international community.
Please do the right thing.
