Ukraine is currently undergoing renovations and accommodations for the 2012 UEFA European Football Championship, which it won the bid to host. However, the preparations don't stop at structural improvements. In fact, innocent stray animals are being burned alive in mobile crematoriums to make way for the thousands of people the championship will attract.
By now there is no excuse for anyone exterminate stray animals at random. There are plenty of people willing to save them and help them find new homes, as well as methods to deal with the problem of strays that don't involve killing them.
We must bring this matter to the attention of Ukraine's authorities so we can prevent any more cruelty as soon as possible. Sign your name asking President Viktor Yanukovych to step in and stand up for Ukraine's stray animals.
Dear President Viktor Yanukovych:
Are you aware about the animal cruelty that is occurring in eastern Ukraine? Authorities have begun to exterminate large populations of stray animals in order to prepare the region for the 2012 UEFA European Football Championship that will be held there.
And the authorities aren't just killing the animals — they're burning them alive in huge mobile crematoriums that reach over 900 degrees C.
There is no reason to deal with the stray animal problem in this way. There are sound, humane methods to address the stray animal population, but mass-extermination isn't the answer.
Please inform the local government that this cruelty will not be tolerated and that it must come up with humane solutions to the problem.
Thank you for your time.
