Wyoming is now the only state that allows hunters to kill wolves year-round — and they don't even need a license to do it. The plan, recently approved by Wyoming Governor Matt Mead and U.S. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, comes after pressures from both the ranchers and Wyoming government regarding wolf management. The problem is, it's based more on political pressure than on science.

A recent ruling also notes that any delisting done by Congress won't be required to be subject to legal review. This means that measures detrimental to wolf survival could be passed without any oversight.

Write to Secretary Ken Salazar asking him to act in good conscience and reverse his decision to allow mass wolf killings in Wyoming.

Dear Secretary Salazar:

Your recent decision to permit hunters in Wyoming to kill wolves arbitrarily and without licenses concerns me deeply. As the Interior Secretary, you have the responsibility to be an advocate for the environment and its inhabitants; yet, you recently made a deal with Wyoming Governor Matt Mead to allow ranchers who are annoyed by wolf predation to shoot the wolves on sight and at random.

Considering the federal government's stance only years earlier, this decision represents a complete reversal and, on its face, appears as little more than capitulation to political interests in the state. As a highly educated individual, you can't possibly think this is good for the wolves. I believe you operated out of growing pressure from ranchers and the government of Wyoming, and that's why you chose political gain over what's truly right.

Once again, we can't afford to sacrifice the survival of these animals. Please find a safer and more enlightened way to deal with the problems the wolves are presenting in Wyoming.

Thank you.
