Goal: 20,000 Progress: 4,988
Sponsored by: The Autism Site

Autism treatment, therapy, and support can cost a family tens of thousands of dollars per year. Autism is the fastest-growing developmental disability, and yet, many insurance carriers don't cover the costs of autism-related therapy at all. This is plain discrimination. There is simply no reason autism shouldn't be covered just as widely as diabetes or cancer.

Currently, ten states require insurance companies, by law, to provide autism coverage. But the rest do not, and families with autistic children or family members aren't being represented in those states. For these families, the financial burden is tremendous.

The kind of discrimination insurance companies are imposing is unfair and unwarranted. We need legislation that will strike down insurance discrimination and provide for federal reform on insurance coverage. Sign the petition asking President Obama to stand up to the insurance industry and make combating autism a priority!

Dear President Obama,

Right before you were elected as President of the United States, you vowed your commitment to reforming the insurance industry's stance on coverage for autism. Your dedication to this matter is valuable, but autism remains one of the fastest-growing learning disabilities in America, and yet insurance carriers continue to refute it as viable for coverage.

Families with autistic members face tens of thousands of dollars in autism care and treatment over the years. There's hardly anyone out there who could afford this type of medical support on their own. Why are insurance companies still allowed to refuse coverage for autism therapy?

We need to stand up for those who are being underrepresented and fight for insurance coverage for autism. I am writing to request that you renew your commitment to this important cause.

Thank you for your time.
