There's a lot of conflicting information out there about autism, and consequently, many people with autism suffer the effects of judgment and discrimination. Perhaps one of the worst cases of autism discrimination comes in the form of a young man who was denied a heart transplant based on his "psychiatric issues."
Paul Corby was recommended for a heart transplant because he was born with a condition called left ventricular noncompaction that prohibits his heart from pumping blood at a normal capacity. Anyone else with the condition would be a no-brainer for the transplant list. But not Paul Corby, all because he has autism — which doctors claim make him less likely to be able to take care of himself following the procedure.
"Autism is not a terminal disease and we cannot allow it to become one," says Paul's mother. Sign the petition to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania urging them to reconsider their discriminatory choices.
Dear Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania:
I am writing in protest of your recent decision to deny a life-saving operation to a man simply because he has autism.
The man in question was born with a condition called left ventricular noncompaction — this prohibits his heart from pumping blood at a normal capacity and he needs a heart transplant.
On the transplant request, Dr. Susan Brozena wrote: "I have recommended against transplant given his psychiatric issues, autism, the complexity of the process, multiple procedures and the unknown and unpredictable effect of steroids on behavior."
This is nothing less than sheer discrimination. You are essentially saying non-autistic individuals are more deserving of life-saving treatments simply because they are "healthier."
Please reverse your decision or face the wrath of a community that wont give up until you do.
Thank you.
