The Amber alert was established to notify communities of missing children and provide information about the situation in question. If a child with autism goes missing, though, the circumstances may be very different than those of a child without autism.
Children with autism can wander away from their homes or families without understanding the dangers around them. There have been many unnecessary deaths due to children wandering away and getting lost or falling into a body of water.
We need to establish a system for children with autism much like the Amber alert. It would provide the circumstances of the disappearance as well as information about their condition — whether verbal or non-verbal, nicknames, favorite spots, etc.
Situations with missing autistic children can be drastically different than those of children without. Sign the petition in support of a special alert for missing children with autism!
Dear President Obama,
We all have witnessed the success of the Amber alert as hundreds of missing children have returned home safely as a result of the warning system. It's now time we implement a similar system for children with autism.
Some 90 percent of children with autism are prone to wandering away from their homes or families without perceiving the dangers of the outside world around them. Many of these children have wandered into forests, gotten lost in extreme weather, or fell into a body of water and drowned.
The fact is, the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of a child with autism can differ greatly from those of a child without. We need to implement a warning system for autistic children like the Amber alert that would notify authorities and communities of a child's triggers, nicknames, and favorite spots.
This kind of information could be vital to finding a missing child before he or she has time to get very far. I am writing to ask for your support in creating an alert system that would help children with autism be safely reunited with their families as quickly as possible.
Thank you for your consideration.
