Former Nevada assembly member Sharron Angle has proven she's not a friend of the autism community. At a Tea Party rally, Angle said some people are claiming arbitrary symptoms "under the umbrella of autism." Her exact words: "Everything they want to throw at us is covered under 'autism' so that's a mandate that you have to pay for...those are the kinds of things we want to get rid of."

Her comments are dangerous and imply that autism treatment shouldn't be mandated within the insurance industry. But many people living with autism can't cover the expensive therapy out of pocket and need assistance in reaching that kind of help.

Worse than any of her remarks, Angle STILL has yet to apologize. Her campaign staff has even defended her comments.

There is no defense for the insensitivity Angle has demonstrated. Tell her to take responsibility and apologize for her terrible remarks. Then click more info to watch Angle's clip!

Dear Sharron Angle,

The remarks you made in 2009 about autism and autism insurance coverage were downright hateful. You implied that people are taking advantage of an autism insurance mandate by claiming they "falsely label other symptoms as under the umbrella of autism." You even used air quotes around the word "autism."

Autism therapy can cost families into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Most average families could never foot these bills out of pocket. That's why it's necessary that insurance carriers are mandated to provide this kind of treatment and therapy. The disorder that you so cleverly put into quotes is a real issue that affects an estimated 1.5 million Americans. Add to that number the family members and friends who lend help and care to their loved ones with autism. That's how many people you offended by what you said.

Worse, you have never once apologized for your comments. In fact, your campaign team has repeatedly attempted to defend them.

You need to admit you were wrong once and for all and apologize to the autism community.

May 14, 2013 Megan Campesi Ms. Angle's remarks are very offensive. She should apologize to the community of people who have autism. It is an extremely difficult illness and comments like that never help anything. Most people can't pay for the medical costs. We should help them.

May 7, 2013 Janice Larrson Being autistic is extremely hard, and saying things like that just make everything worse. People need to be educated about it, and you aren't helping us at all.
May 6, 2013 Lisa Robinson This statement is truly offensive, People need to be educated. We teach our children not to Judge. Shame on you for setting a bad example for them.
May 6, 2013 Christina Chambers I consider myself a member of the Tea Party movement, but more importantly, I am the mother of 2 boys with autism. Your denigrating remarks are not only hurtful, they are dangerous, adding more fuel to the rhetorical fire that threatens autism equity.
