Accuboost encouraging for early-stage treatment

Isabel Alvarez is a New York City breast cancer patient who undergone many exhausting treatments. She recently began an Accuboost treatment at The Farber Center for Radiation Oncology, which provides a concentrated dose of radiation, according to New York's WABC-TV.

"The majority of the dose is distributed exactly where we want it to go to and we can see where we want it to go for the first time," Dr. Leonard Farber told the news source.

For patients like Alvarez, the treatment is a welcome change from the side effects from chemotherapy. The Accuboost treatment requires doctors to take a picture of the affected area where Alvarez' tumor was located. They then deliver four separate beams around the area in order to evenly distribute the dose and to prevent skin damage. The treatment only takes about 25 minutes and could be the future of specialized radiation treatment for early-stage breast cancer.

"I'm making plans for the future, prior to this I was in doubt with everything but now, there's hope," Alvarez told the news outlet.

According to BreastCancer.org, there are over 2.5 million breast cancer survivors living in the United States.
