Breast cancer activist Evelyn Lauder passes away

One of the biggest activists for breast cancer, Evelyn Lauder, has passed away due to ovarian cancer complications at age 75 this past Saturday, according to CBS News.

Lauder was one of the founders of the pink ribbon campaign, which made breast cancer awareness a reality, according to the news source. She was also a breast cancer survivor herself, diagnosed in 1989.

"There had been no publicity about breast cancer, but a confluence of events - the pink ribbon, the color, the press, partnering with Elizabeth Hurley, having Estee Lauder as an advertiser in so many magazines and persuading so many of my friends who are health and beauty editors to do stories about breast health - got people talking," Lauder said during a conference just last month, the media outlet reports.

According to the American Cancer Society, one in eight women in the U.S. will eventually be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in her lifetime. Not only is it the second most common form of cancer among women behind skin cancer, but it is also the second leading cause of cancer-related death among women, following only lung cancer.
