Breast cancer on the rise in Australia

According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, nearly fifty women a day may be diagnosed with breast cancer by 2020.

"The number of women diagnosed with breast cancer is expected to rise in the future due to the ageing population. Our projections indicate that in 2020 about 17,200 new breast cancers will be diagnosed in Australia This would equate to 47 women being diagnosed every day,"  said AIHW spokesperson Anne Bech

At the same time, the five-year survival rates show that breast cancer is one of the top four most beatable cancers for women, ahead of cervical, uterus and kidney cancer.

Still almost half of all Australian women aged over 50 do not have their free bi-annual mammogram. A number of groups are coming together to raise awareness and encourage women to receive regular mammogram screenings to improve their chances through early diagnosis and prompt treatment.

"Importantly, the report also shows that survival from breast cancer continues to improve in Australia, with these improvements due to both earlier diagnosis and better treatments," said Cancer Australia CEO Dr. Helen Zorbas.
