Breast cancer survivors encouraged to monitor their health

The five-year survival rate of individuals diagnosed with stage one breast cancer is about 95 percent, according to the American Cancer Society. Those who have already won the battle against the deadly disease should remember to take a few precautionary measures, according to U.S. News and World Report.

Karen Syrjala, the co-director of the survivorship program at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, says that there are a number of emotional and physical obstacles breast cancer survivors endure after treatment.

She recommends going over any methods patients used while recovering with their primary care physicians, such as chemotherapy and radiation. Doctors can help patients develop a plan to monitor the longterm effects of these treatments.

Counseling is another treatment survivors can undergo in order to tackle their fears of their cancer returning. This is a common occurrence among those who have beat the disease. The positive reinforcement provided by a therapist can help individuals handle the emotional road to recovery.

With exercise and a healthy diet, Syrjala says survivors can keep themselves in shape and serve as an inspiration to people still battling breast cancer.
