Breast cancer survivors walk the runway to raise awareness

Breast cancer survivors from Farmington, New Mexico, gathered Wednesday evening to strut their stuff for a cure, The Daily-Times reports.

The annual "Celebrating Life in Style" is a luncheon and style show hosted by a local boutique and a medical foundation in which breast cancer survivors walk the runway to support each other and to raise breast cancer awareness, according to the media outlet.

"We try to choose models who are receiving treatment," Audra Winters, special events coordinator for the San Juan Medical Foundation, told the news source. "It's a celebration of life, a way to celebrate the journey, to bring all the survivors together and honor them."

Women who participated also got to share their personal stories and give advice to those who were recently diagnosed. The most important piece of advice they had? Don't give up.

According to the American Cancer Society, one in eight women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point during her lifetime. It is the second most common form of cancer among women, following only skin cancer.
