Change in treatments after surgery may lead a change in patient's surgery preference

Many breast cancer patients choose the complete mastectomy instead of a lumpectomy because radiation follows the lumpectomy and not the mastectomy. However, a new treatment method may cut the therapy time after surgery in half for those who opt for the lumpectomy, according to USA Today.

Dr. Frank Vicini has been working on this idea of a higher radiation dose in order to have women up on their feet much quicker - even three weeks time - than those who receive other treatments. Vicini is hoping that this will change breast cancer patients' minds and instead of choosing the more disfiguring will go with the fewer treatments of radiation.

According to American Cancer Society, one in eight women in the U.S. will eventually be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point during their lifetime. It is the second leading cause of cancer-related death among women, following only lung cancer. However, the death rate has been declining due to breast cancer health news and research since 1990.
