Colorado legislators pass bill securing insurance coverage of mammograms

Colorado lawmakers recently passed a bill that would guarantee health insurance coverage of annual mammogram screenings in women aged 40 and over, which Governor Bill Ritter is expected to sign.

The legislation, House Bill 1252, was proposed late in 2009, after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention amended their cancer screening guidelines to recommend that women begin getting annual mammograms starting at age 50 - a decade after their prior recommendations suggested - Fox affiliate KDVR reports.

Dr Kevin Wooley, a radiologist at Advanced Medical imaging in Denver who lobbied for the bill's approval, told the news source, "That [bill] will save people's lives."

He added, "There are a certain number of cancers that are found in women between the ages of 40 and 50. If women aren't coming in during that interval, there are a certain number of cancers that [will] be missed."

Colorado Representative Diane Primavera, a breast cancer survivor, co-sponsored the bill, ultimately looking to protect women's rights and issue a powerful reminder about the importance of annual screenings and breast cancer awareness.

The new law will fall in line with the American Cancer Society's screening recommendation that women over age 40 have a mammogram each year.ADNFCR-2795-ID-19722044-ADNFCR
