Connecticut health center gives free mammograms to uninsured women

The Breast Cancer Alliance of Greenwich, Connecticut, is promoting women's rights and breast cancer awareness by providing free screenings for all uninsured women in Fairfield County.

All women are eligible for the free breast cancer screenings, which are administered at the Greenwich Hospital Breast Center, regardless of their age or finances, the Greenwich Citizen reports.

"One of the wonderful things about this program is that they underwrite follow-up care," Patty Perrone, Greenwich Hospital Breast Center's manager, told the news source.

She added, "I had a patient in tears on the phone when she heard they would cover her follow up tests. She knew something was wrong, and she didn't know how she would pay for it."

Though the free mammography program usually serves about 100 women each year, higher unemployment and the loss of medical insurance contributed to a total of 147 women served in 2009.

Last October, the Alliance held a special auction, where guests donated about $117,000 to fund the free screening program.

The American Cancer Society recommends that women in their 20s and 30s begin receiving breast cancer screenings as part of a periodic health exam and that those over 40 should be screened annually.
