Doctors destroy breast cancer tumors by freezing them

While many people are looking forward to the balmy weather of the summer months, some doctors are saying that sub-zero temperatures may be sought out by breast cancer patients, regardless of the season.

In a study presented at the Society of Interventional Radiology's 35th Annual Scientific Meeting in Tampa, Florida, scientists said they were able to adapt a technique used to treat prostate cancer to destroy breast cancer tumors by freezing them, the Vancouver Sun reports.

Using this technique, called cryotherapy, the doctors delivered temperatures of -30 degrees Celsius to breast cancer tumors using a small needle, thereby destroying the cancer cells and eliminating the need for surgery in 13 patients.

"Cryotherapy opens the door for a potential new treatment for breast cancer and needs to be further tested," the study's lead author, Peter Littrup, told the news source.

He added, "When used for local control and/or potential cure for breast cancer, it provided safe and effective conservation for a group of women who refused invasive surgery."

According to the National Cancer Institute, radiation cycles, targeted drug therapy and the sentinel lymph node biopsy are other treatment options for breast cancer patients.ADNFCR-2795-ID-19675424-ADNFCR
