Firefighters' breast cancer fundraiser exceeds expectations

Firefighters in Burlington, North Carolina, are overjoyed at the success of their most recent fundraiser to benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the Pink Ribbon Fund. With the sale of pink t-shirts, the firefighters raised nearly $10,000 for the cancer organization, according to digtriad.com.

The brave men and women of Battalion C started the fundraiser back in October during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In many ways, the fundraiser was a way for the firefighters to interact with the community when they were not on duty, and the overwhelming response from the community has the department thinking of continuing the plan in the future.

The firefighters only expected to sell about 300 shirts but the demand ballooned to more than 2,000 shirts by the time the holiday season was over. This past Thursday, Battalion C presented their donation to the Susan G. Komen Foundation and the Pink Ribbon fund at the Alamance Regional Medical Center.

This year's fundraiser exceeded expectations and the firefighters plan on continuing the initiative in the future.

Founded in 2003, the Pink Ribbon Fund is an all-volunteer nonprofit organization that is dedicated to providing services and financial assistance to Pine Belt breast cancer patients.
