Fitzgerald making personal donations during Breast Cancer Awareness Month

National Football League (NFL) fans may have already noticed players sporting hot pink gear on Sundays this October. The reason is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, celebrated every October to educate individuals on this debilitating disease. One player has taken the NFL's initiative to a whole new level, however, by personally making donations out of his own pocket.

Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald lost his mother to breast cancer in 2003. To top off the NFL's celebration of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Fitzgerald says he will donate $1,000 to breast cancer programs each time he makes a catch. For every touchdown, Fitzgerald will donate $5,000, according to SportingNews.com.

The NFL's collaboration with the American Cancer Society in recognizing Breast Cancer Awareness Month is called "A Crucial Catch: Annual Screening Saves Lives." Their goal is to not only further educate the public on the disease, but encourage women aged 40 or older to have annual mammograms.

In 2006, the Center for Disease Control reported that more than 191,000 women were diagnosed with breast cancer. The mortality rate of individuals who catch breast cancer early is low, however, which is why organizations such as the NFL continue to advocate for regular screening.
