Hundreds of thousands of cancer cases could have been preventable

A new study published in Science Translational Medicine found that more than half of a million people in the U.S. have died from cancer, and what's more is that approximately 280,000 of these individuals may have been able to prevent it.

The biggest ways in which people could have prevented these diseases include eating healthy, exercising and quit smoking, as these are all risk factors.

"We actually have an enormous amount of data about the causes and preventability of cancer," Graham Colditz, a professor at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and co-author of the new study, said in a prepared statement. "It's time we made an investment in implementing what we know."

According to American Cancer Society, one in eight women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point during her lifetime. Not only is it the second most common form of cancer among women behind skin cancer, but it is the second leading cause of cancer-related death among women, following only lung cancer.
