Illinois nursery goes pink to benefit cancer research

A garden facility in Campton Hills, Illinois, has made Pink Ribbon activities news by trading in its signature color of green. The nursery will instead go "pink" to raise money and awareness for breast cancer research.

Wasco Nursery and Garden Center recently hosted a Pink Night for Breast Cancer Research, the Kane County Chronicle reports. The event featured pink plants and planters, as well as raffles and silent auctions. Guests at the Pink Night could also purchase a pink duck from one of the garden center's ponds. Each duck corresponded to a prize.

The business unveiled a pink hydrangea for the event, with $1 from the sale of each plant donated directly to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Additionally, 25 percent of pink plant sales and 10 percent of all other plant purchases will be donated to the foundation as well as the LivingWell Cancer Resource Center and The Delnor Center for Breast Health, both local Illinois organizations.

Although there is no way to predict exactly who will get breast cancer, several risk factors exist, according to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. For example, half of all women diagnosed with breast cancer are over the age of 65. Other factors include a family history of breast cancer, early menstruation or late menopause, lack of physical activity, and being obese or overweight.
