Junk food puts off-spring at higher risk of breast cancer

Some mothers-to-be use their pregnancy as an opportunity to focus on nutrition and ensure their bodies are getting all of the nutrients they need. Other women use their pre-baby cravings as an excuse to indulge in their favorite junk foods.

Unfortunately, pregnant women who chow down on unhealthy fare could ultimately affect the health of their offspring for generations to come.

That's right - the foods that are eaten during the gestational period could impact the overall wellbeing of the baby, and that baby's baby, according to research presented at the American Association for Cancer Research's annual conference.

At the event, researchers reported that in a study conducted on rats, when expectant females were fed a fatty diet and their offspring was fed normally, the grandchildren of the rats who had been given unhealthy food had a much higher chance of developing breast cancer than those whose relatives had been given a healthy diet.

"The implications from this study are that pregnant mothers need to eat a well-balanced diet because they may be affecting the future health of their daughters and granddaughters," researcher Dr Sonia de Assis said of the findings.
