Mammograms save lives, research confirms

Swedish researchers have confirmed that mammograms can save lives, according to a new report from ABC.

The Swedish study looked at more than 100,000 women, starting in 1977.

"I think this study indicates the absolute benefit of screening in terms of breast cancer deaths prevented," Stephen Duffy, who was the lead author of the study, and a professor at Queen Mary, University of London, told the news source.

The American Cancer Society currently recommends that all women over the age of 40 have yearly mammograms. However, there was a U.S. Preventive Services Task Force report in 2009 that countered this recommendation. Now, the Swedish study provides a clear recommendation for mammograms for every woman.

More than 200,000 women in the U.S. are diagnosed each year with breast cancer, the second most common cancer for women after skin cancer.
