Mom Fights Back!
May 4, 2013 by Kaleesha RajamantriJen is the proud mom of three beautiful girls, and despite her early diagnosis of breast cancer, she was not going to let the pain of chemo and radiation affect her babies. Jen had previously watched her own mom battle breast cancer, and knew just how hard the process can be on loved ones. So Jen opted for a double mastectomy!

In March of 2012, I had a mammogram. It showed something. I went for a digital one a week later. That one finally sent me to a breast cancer surgeon, who did a biopsy in May. That came back negative, but my doctor didn't like that answer, so he did a stereotactic biopsy.

I found the lump myself and asked my doctor to check it out. He said it was probably nothing, but made me an appointment to get an ultrasound and mammogram. After spending the good part of the day there, the doctor came in and said they wanted to do a needle biopsy.

At age 43, my mother found a lump in her right breast. She insisted it was just a cyst, and didn't want to go to the doctor. My sisters and I made an appointment for her, and after much discussion, she agreed to go.

After finding a lump, I was in shock for about 20 minutes. I had places to go, people to see, and things to do. I had three weeks before I was to see my son graduate from the Marine Corps and nothing was going to stop me. Ten days post-op, I was on the plane. It has been 3 1/2 years and I'm okay—more than okay—thanks to my terrific surgeon and awesome oncologist.
