Multivitamins could lower risk of breast cancer recurrence

The abundance of health care benefits tied to multivitamins are now an important ally in the fight against breast cancer. A study presented at the recent San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium contends that women with breast cancer who take multivitamins stand a much better chance of survival or preventing a recurrence of the disease, according to WebMD.com.

"Multivitamins appears to especially benefit women undergoing radiation treatment," says researcher Heather Greenlee of Columbia University's Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center in New York City.

Clinical trials are still in the preliminary stages and for the most part, researchers cannot prove cause and effect. Women who typically have a proper diet and regular exercise are more inclined to take multivitamins which may skew the numbers. Recent data presented at the Symposium contends that diet and exercise have a significant impact on survival and recurrence rates.

Researchers are currently coordinating new studies that examine the association between multivitamin use and breast cancer prognosis.

According to the American Cancer Society, women should begin yearly mammograms at age 40.
