New study may allow patients to opt out of hormonal therapy

Researchers from Denmark recently came out with new breast cancer treatment news. This new study found that women who are older than 60 and have been diagnosed with the early stages of breast cancer, may be able to opt out of hormonal therapy without raising the risk of the disease being fatal.

Hormonal therapy, even though it can be very effective, could also be life-threatening.

The result "confirms what we know, but it leaves open a lot of questions as well," said Jennifer Griggs, a professor of internal medicine at the University of Michigan. "Not everyone needs systemic [hormone] therapy, but the question we are stuck with is, 'Who does?'"

Even with these findings, it is believed that women will still opt for the hormonal therapy to reduce the risk of recurrence.

According to the American Cancer Society, one in eight women in the U.S. will eventually be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point during her lifetime. It is the second leading cause of cancer-related death among women, following lung cancer.
