New technology allows breast cancer one-day treatment

New technology is being offered at an Exeter, New Hampshire, hospital that will allow breast cancer patients to go in for a one-day treatment, according to SeacoastOnline.

The Intraoperative Radiation Therapy, which is an option for those who suffer from early stages of breast cancer, can be given to the patients in a single dose during a surgery, the media outlet reports.

"I think this is a great breakthrough for women," Dr. Diane Palladino, a breast surgeon at the hospital, told the news source. "For those who have to travel, this is a one-shot-and-you're-done treatment."

Women need to speak with their doctor to see if they are eligible for this one-day treatment because there are limitations. However, it could have the same effect as radiation that is administered 10 or 20 times.

According to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, it is recommended that once a woman turns 40, she schedules annual mammograms. In addition, those with a family history may want to start making these appointments earlier, as a genetic disposition is a common risk factor of breast cancer.
