Oklahoma medical center offering free screenings

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and groups, charities and businesses across the nation are taking part in fighting this disease including a medical center in Purcell, Oklahoma, according to the Purcell Register.

Two physician assistants, Erin Cook and Tonja Shandy, have volunteered to give free breast cancer examinations throughout the month, as many women are unable to afford it or are unaware of what to look for, according to the media outlet.

"Breast and cervical cancers are much easier to treat and have a greater survival rate when diagnosed in the early stages," Shandy and Cook told the news source. "Many people are unaware of programs available to help women when an abnormality is found. And, many patients do not have insurance or funds to pay for additional testing."

According to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, it is recommended that once a woman turns 40 she gets yearly mammograms. Those who have an extensive family history of breast cancer, may want to start making these appointments earlier to ensure that the disease is caught during its beginning stages.
