Personalized breast cancer tests could become a reality

Northern Ireland researchers at Randox Laboratories and the University of Ulster have begun trials on personalized breast cancer tests that are gene-specific and could be tailored to individual patients, according to the UK Press Association.

"The objective of this personalized medicine fellowship and indeed stratified medicine in general is to better target patient drug treatment and care based on personal genetic information about a patient or group of patients," Professor Tony Bjourson of the University of Ulster Biomedical Research Institute told the news source.

Much of the research has stemmed from recent discoveries in the human genome. The aim was to create medicine that targets specific diseases rather than destroying necessary cells and tissue.

Genome testing on cancer patients could provide insight into a person's susceptibility to a disease, their potential side effects from medication and how to avoid unnecessary treatments. Researchers believe with enough perseverance, they can begin to create personalized treatment options to avoid needless life-threatening complications from certain treatments.

According to the BreastCancer.org, about 1 in 8 American women will develop some form of invasive breast cancer in their lifetime.
