Pivotal Phase III trials for breast cancer treatment approved

Medifocus Inc. announced that the company has received Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval for its Medifocus Breast Cancer treatment system.

The approval is granted by the Western Institutional Review Board (WIRB). Dr. Mary Beth Tomaselli will supervise the approved study.

"I was a co-investigator in the prior Phase II study using the Medifocus Breast Cancer treatment system and have seen first hand excellent tumor shrinkage and control," Dr. Tomaselli told the news source. "I am excited to be part of the final Phase III study team."

The treatment looks at using microwave heat energy along with chemotherapy prior to operating on the breast tumors.

Women should receive yearly mammograms if they are over the age of 40, according to the American Cancer Society. Younger women should have regular clinical breast exams as well. One out of every eight women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in her lifetime, reports BreastCancer.org.
