Plastic surgery offers hope to breast cancer patients

For a woman, finding out she has breast cancer can be one of the scariest things to hear. For those who choose to have a mastectomy - or removing one or both of their breasts altogether to avoid getting the disease again, the scars can be even more lasting, the Carroll County Times reports.

Many women with adequate insurance are given the option to undergo reconstructive surgery to get implants put in to re-create the look of having breasts.

According to Dr. Guy Cappuccino, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon, many women are fearful of having the surgery done. He believes this is due to how rushed everything is - from the diagnosis, to the procedure a woman chooses to have done and then the aftermath of living as a breast cancer survivor.

"The female breast is a complex emotional organ, it is not only important for nursing children but also has a role in sexual interaction and forming a sense of self for patients," Cappuccino told the publication. "Breast cancer and mastectomy threatens to alter all of these roles, but fortunately reconstruction offers hope for not only physical, but emotional, healing."

According to Cancer.gov, women who have had cancer before are more likely to develop new cancer in the opposite breast. With reconstructive surgery on the rise, those worried about undergoing a mastectomy may feel more at ease knowing their breasts can be given back.
