Protein Cip4 helps fight breast cancer

The protein Cip4 was found to eliminate an enzyme on breast cancer cells that helps the cancer spread, according to a report from The Whig-Standard.

The research was conducted by scientists at Queen's University and has the potential to stop breast cancer metastasis in the future.

"We've been studying some of the cellular changes that happen when cancer cells are breaking through into surrounding tissue, and this is some kind of fundamental science about what controls that step," said lead researcher Dr. Andrew Craig of the university's biochemistry department.

Breast cancer affects both men and women, although the prevalence rates are much higher in women. According to the American Cancer Society, more than 200,000 women were diagnosed with the disease in 2010. Women over the age of 40 should receive annual mammograms, says the ACS.
