Study shows Hispanic women less likely to get breast cancer

While every woman is at risk for breast cancer, some ethnic groups may be less likely to acquire the disease. Now, one study suggests that Hispanic women have a greater chance of living without breast cancer than their Caucasian peers.

According to CNN.com, researchers at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs studied women from both races who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. While up to 75 percent of Caucasian participants had known risk factors, only around 36 percent of Latino women had factors that put them at a higher risk than average.

"The whole intent was to shed light on why there are these differences," Lisa Hines, a University of Colorado at Colorado Springs assistant professor, told the news source.

Researchers discovered that factors which could put Hispanic women at greater risk include menstruating at an early age, refraining from breastfeeding and not maintaining an exercise routine. However, these women continually show less incidences of being diagnosed than their caucasian counterparts.

While these findings may be a relief to Hispanic women, they should still work to be proactive about their breast health. Women over the age of 40 are advised to have a yearly mammogram in order to facilitate early detection of the disease.
