I had three weeks before I was to see my son graduate from the Marine Corps and nothing was going to stop me. Ten days post-op, I was on the plane. I had a history of breast cysts. Every time I had my routine mammogram, I had an ultrasound too. When I went for my yearly mammogram, the radiologist told me that I didn’t need an ultrasound. I would not leave without one.

There was this funny rash. My doctor took one look and said I would see an oncologist. My inflammatory breast cancer was stage IVB, and I was given five weeks to live.

I was writing in my journal, and as I got up to put it away, I bumped my arm into a wall and it bounced into my left breast. I thought, “No way – did I just feel what I think I felt?” The following week I had a mammogram. I was diagnosed with Stage 0 DCIS. I decided to be aggressive, and had a double mastectomy.

I was twenty-eight when my gynecologist found a marble-sized knot on my left breast. Oddly, I was assured that this was nothing to be worried about! No family history, I was young... these fatty little knots happen sometimes. My cancer metastasized to my lungs, lymph nodes, and one kidney. To this day I am still fighting. I have faith, a wonderful family, and great friends!
