I found the lump myself and asked my doctor to check it out. He said it was probably nothing, but made me an appointment to get an ultrasound and mammogram. After spending the good part of the day there, the doctor came in and said they wanted to do a needle biopsy.

I had three weeks before I was to see my son graduate from the Marine Corps and nothing was going to stop me. Ten days post-op, I was on the plane. I was writing in my journal, and as I got up to put it away, I bumped my arm into a wall and it bounced into my left breast. I thought, “No way – did I just feel what I think I felt?” The following week I had a mammogram. I was diagnosed with Stage 0 DCIS. I decided to be aggressive, and had a double mastectomy.

I was twenty-eight when my gynecologist found a marble-sized knot on my left breast. Oddly, I was assured that this was nothing to be worried about! No family history, I was young... these fatty little knots happen sometimes. My cancer metastasized to my lungs, lymph nodes, and one kidney. To this day I am still fighting. I have faith, a wonderful family, and great friends!

Sonya Rose had a strange dream; it urged her to get screened. The path that unwound ahead of her was unbelievably hard - she was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer, followed by a lumpectomy, 8 cycles of chemo, and finally a bilateral total skin-sparring mastectomy with immediate reconstruction.
